SpaceX stock gift announced for Trump Accounts
CNBC reports that eligible Trump Account holders will start receiving donated SpaceX shares next month, based on an X post from Gwynne Shotwell on Friday. Shotwell, who is SpaceX’s president and chief operating officer, said she and her husband are giving away more than 2 million shares of SpaceX stock.
Who will receive the shares
According to Shotwell’s post, the gift will provide one share each to about 2 million Trump Accounts holders who are ages 11 to 17 and live in ZIP codes where median family income is $57,000 or lower. CNBC says the same applies to ZIP codes with too few residents for the U.S. Census Bureau to report a median family income. Shotwell said these families should receive a notice by Monday.
Additional gifts and account details
Shotwell also wrote on X that another gift is expected to be finalized in a few weeks for eligible children ages 11 to 17 in military families serving overseas, children in foster care, and other children with a median family income of $90,000 or less living in counties near the family’s home in Texas. CNBC notes that parents or guardians can check eligibility through Invest America, a nonprofit advocacy group, and can track account activity using the Trump Accounts app.
Background on Trump Accounts and stock donations
CNBC reports that Trump Accounts, also called 530A accounts, are available to any U.S. child under 18 with a Social Security number. The article says children born from 2025 through 2028 may also receive a one-time $1,000 Treasury deposit, and other funds could be available depending on certain criteria. CNBC adds that the Treasury issued temporary rules at the end of September allowing Trump Accounts to hold donated individual stocks, rather than only diversified low-cost index funds. CNBC also reports that IRS CEO Frank Bisignano said on Oct. 8 that the change could help lead to larger philanthropic gifts.
Related donation plans
In a separate October announcement, CNBC says Elon Musk wrote on X that he plans to give every child in America a share of SpaceX sometime in 2027, which he said may also be delivered through Trump Accounts. CNBC also reports that on Oct. 29, Bisignano announced a donation to eligible children ages 2 to 8 living in 11234, his hometown ZIP code, according to The Bisignano Family Fund.
